Birthday

The anniversary of the birth of a man is the day on which the “Mazal”, the part of his soul that is up there, reveals himself with all his strength. It is then for this man, the opportunity to establish the balance of his moral situation, to make good decisions to fix the past, and also to prepare for the future.

Baal Chem Tov introduced the custom of reciting the Psalm corresponding to the number of his years each day and, on his birthday, last year and the beginning of the year. This practice is scrupulously respected by the Hassidim and Rabbi Rayats has shown its great importance in this regard.

Rabbi Shlita, in particular, highlighted the importance of the anniversary and the need for everyone to celebrate it. He defined ten specific birthday day practices, which are as follows:

1) Make Alya laTorá the Shabbat that precedes the birthday and the same day too, if it is a reading day.

2) Give an amount of Tsedaka, before Chaharit, the morning prayer, and Minhá, the afternoon prayer. If the birthday is a Shabbat or a feast day, we will do it the day before, if possible, also the next day.

3) To be more profound and focused on prayer, to pray with more fervor, meditating on the greatness of God and we will also recite the Psalms, all if possible, or at least one of the five books.

4) We will study the new Psalm that we started to recite on his birthday, which corresponds to the number of his years. (if the person celebrates his 10 years, he will read Psalm 11). Furthermore, we will also study this Psalm in each new month, Rosh Hodesh. We will learn, each time, a verse of this Psalm, but, if it is long, two or three verses, so that we can finish it during the course of the year. If this Psalm has less than twelve verses, we will repeat it so that your study takes up the whole year.

5) We will establish a supplementary study of the revealed part of the Torah and of the hassidut, in addition to the three daily studies of hitat, namely the humach, Tehilim, Tanya, which concern each one, and we will also study the Rambam daily.

6) We will recite a speech by Hassidut, Maamar of the color hassidut, in whole or in part. We can choose the one we want. We will recite this Maamar in public, on the day of the anniversary or on an upcoming occasion, particularly during the following Shabbat afternoon, during the “third meal”.

7) We will do one more good deed for the good of others, spreading Torah and Chassidut abroad, penetrated by Ahavat Israel. It will be a good blending decision.

8) We will isolate ourselves and evoke our memories. We will then study Rabbi's teaching. We will meditate on all of this. We will do Teshuva and redo it whenever we think it is necessary. We will take stock of last year's behavior and make good decisions for next year.

9) We will adopt a good supplementary behavior that, well understood, will be according to your moral situation, as we do in Rosh Hashana. For what is true for the day of creation of the world is also true for the creation of each individual, when a new year begins for a man.

10) We will organize a Hasidic meeting with friends and with a lot of respect and love, a happy Farbrengen with his family, friends and acquaintances. We will thank God and give praise. As far as possible, we will recite the blessing of “Cheeheyanu”, consuming a new fruit or wearing a new outfit. We will do all this with the happiness of Torah and Mitsva.
